Paul Russell and Company is happy to offer this fine example of a 1958 Porsche 356 Convertible D, chassis no. 85837. Chassis 85837 was built in December of '58 and sold early on in '59 to its first owner. The car was delivered in Silver Metallic/5706 with a black interior along with sealed beam headlights, U.S. bumpers and mirror as optional equipment. The early history of the car is unknown until 1968 when Merchant Marine, Ronald Sutton, of New Orleans, LA, purchased the vehicle. Mr. Sutton would own the car until 1988. During this time, a detailed booklet was kept describing all the work that was completed on the car during Mr. Sutton's ownership. In 1988 it was sold to shipmate Jules Schafer who would begin the initial refurbishment process. Throughout the early nineties, the received a partial cosmetic restoration and a full engine rebuild to a replacement 356C engine and mechanical overhaul. Subsequently, the car was painted white and received a "Big Bore" 1720 kit in the replacement 356C engine. It is unsure when the original engine was removed and set to the side (and the original engine remains with the car today), but it is believed to be during this period. In 2001, the current owner, a Merchant Marine himself, purchased the car from Mr. Schafer.
In 2006, Meister Restoration Corporation began a full mechanical refurbishment including a complete rebuild to the engine, rear axle and brakes. Between 2010 and 2014, the car underwent a cosmetic restoration where it was painted back to its original silver. During this time, the car would receive a new front clip and bumpers. Once completed, the owner continued to drive the car including a round trip from Massachusetts to Nova Scotia and back. The car today is described as a good driver, ready for local shows and driving tours. The car presents itself well, but does show some age with paint chips throughout the exterior. If you are looking for a good open Porsche 356 to confidently drive and not be afraid of damaging the originality (due to the later and higher horsepower "C" engine), this is it.
The car has recently undergone a mechanical sorting by Paul Russell and Company to bring the car to a good, driving standard. In addition, we have taken the opportunity to document the originality of the car. We find the body number stamped in several places throughout the car including the windshield frame, hinge covers, soft top and inner door panels.
